Michael Hempseed is the author of Being A True Hero: Understanding and Preventing Suicide in Your Community, www.beingatruehero.com The book is being used by the New Zealand Police, Fire and Emergency NZ, GPs, counsellors as well as many parents and teachers. The book looks at a significant number of factors that play a role in suicide from, depression, anxiety, loneliness, psychosis, bullying, the cluster effect and failure. Michael gained an Honours degree in psychology from the University of Canterbury in 2008. In 2016 he spoke at TEDx.


Abstract:

It is vital that every social worker in New Zealand has a solid understanding of suicide prevention as they will never know when it will be needed. Many people have done suicide prevention training in the past. As new knowledge emerges it is vital that people keep up to date with the latest research. Suicide prevention can be a scary topic, but this webinar will give all attendees more confidence in this field.

Participants will have:

    •   Some scripts to use in the assessment for risk of suicide in clients.
    •   Knowledge of action to take when risk is high
    •   Information about what increases suicide risk
    •   Knowledge they can apply to their own self care
