Prior to his time with NZ Police Alan worked in the UK as an instructor in a maximum security prison in the North of England, where he spent time training inmates in new and more productive skills in a large workshop environment, and later travelled the country relieving as a workshop supervisor at a range of penal establishments throughout England.
