Presenter: Mereana Pitman, Rongamaiwahine, Ngāti Kahungunu,
Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Manuhuri, Ngāti Wai.
SOCIAL CHANGE TAKES TIME AND BRAVERY:
Mereana is a highly regarded researcher, trainer and facilitator, cultural supervisor, anti-violence advocate,
and advocate for children and young people. Mereana inspires and challenges mainstream thinking
through her work as a Te Tiriti of Waitangi and Decolonisation Educator, Strategist and Advisor
And while people tell Mereana to “move on” from reflecting on the past, Mereana says Māori need the
freedom to assert their voice and independence in the running of the country.
“I can’t change the way white privilege works, but I can change the way our children respond to that.”
